Castoriadis and the anthropological and political significance of tragedy

In this article, we will examine, in general terms, the role that tragedy played in creating original anthropology and ethics, taking as a reference point what Castoriadis called the "imaginary apprehension of the world" by the ancient Greeks. It is a question of understanding the relevance of tragedy as a repository of the social meanings present in the institution of ancient Greek society and, to this extent, verifying how it can prove useful for an apprehension of the singularity of ancient man's relationships with nature, with his fellow human beings and with himself, both in the formation and modification of his world. Our text does no more than pose this question.
